CJS18 Art Jar Recipe 02

#CJS18 #CreativeJumpStart #jumpstartyourcreativity #mixedmedia #artjournal

Day 2 with Nathalie Kalbach's Creative JumpStart! A little late posting as January has my immune system doing a little jumpstart of its own, as all the lovely bugs going round are giving me a great workout!
Tina Walker's Art Recipe Jar had me a little perplexed at first, as I wanted to put all my energy into creating not cataloging. I think it's a great idea and I will make one, eventually when I get some time. In the meantime I used her picks excluding the pan pastels as I don't have any.
This was so much fun and a great way to get out of a rut. I loved the nature element and I wonder what other exciting things you could put in your jar.

Mermaid Mixed Media

Paper Learning Curve - Grá O'Neill : EK Success Disney Collection, Prima Finnabair Bubbles, Simon Says Stamp Waves stencil, Docrafts Cameos, flowers, metal, mixed media

My mixed media madness continues with a special mermaid underworld scene for a very special 21 year old who's Disney mad. This was a labour of love and I enjoyed every minute. Wonderful for me, but for you it means I've taken lots of pictures and this post will challenge your broadband!

I started with embossing paste and stencils, a coat of gesso and then by sticking all my bits and bobs in place, then covered it all with black gesso. This was very nerve racking for me, but after attending a fabulous Finnabair class last year I knew I want to try it.

Now to add back in some colour with mica powders in sprays and gels. This was a lot of fun and I may have got a little carried away as there was some seepage through all the layers of card. This wasn't a problem as I covered the back with patterned paper.

I then prepared the central panel. I wanted a sunken treasure feel, so I diecut a frame several times, coated it in black gesso and distressed it with gold mica powder, perfect pearls, mica flakes and glitter. Ariel [EK Success stamp] is coloured with promarkers, covered with stickles, crackle accents, wink of stella.

Some close ups of all the details. Sorry in advance, I find it difficult to stop adding to a canvas and now it's the same with all the photographs I've taken!

Engagement

I wanted a go at negative space & pink space, so I die cut a heart from the white textured card front & coloured it pink with Worn Lipstick Distress ink. A second heart was embossed with flowers & vines, coloured with distress ink, the flowers were highlighted with Star Dust Stickles and the whole heart was covered in Glossy Accents.  I love how the Stickles picks up the colour of the distress ink underneath it. More Stickles were added to the large heart & the banner sentiment. The base card was coloured pink & stamped with roses & vines.

Dust 'Em Off: This is my first time using the Disney stamps & Jak Heath Paper. I've had them in my stash for ages. I very rarely use the Congratulations stamp, but I do love all the curls- perfect for glitter!

Top Tip:
If you don't have the space or cash for all the colours of glitter glues, just buy an iridescent glitter glue. It will pick up the distress ink or Promarker/Sharpie colour underneath. The Stickles looked really pink after applied to the wet (or almost dry) distress ink and the sharpies changed my iridescent glue rainbow colours.

Happy Birthday!

I love playing with distress inks & fussy cutting. The cat, dog, bee, butterfly & tree were paper pieced and the flowers, sky & grass were coloured using distress inks. I've highlighted the flight paths, the bees wings & the birds on the patterned paper with glitter glue and I've only used one Promarker to stripe the bee. The flower stamps come in parts, so each one is unique.
